Second week in Rotterdam(Tarvi)

30.04.18

The second week kicked off in style as it was raining on monday morning and by the time I got to work, I was completely soaked and had to dry my clothes in the bathroom as well as walk around in socks all day, while my shoes were drying.
As for work, I continued doing my translation work because it was not yet finished and there was quite a lot to do. That was my work for the day, nothing that noteworthy. At least i managed to get home without getting soaked again.

The next day, thankfully, the weather was much nicer. At work I still had to deal with the translations. I finally finished the actual texts, but that was still not it, as I now had to work on adding screenshots to the wikis. As you might guess, it took a while and it wasn't just because i'm a bit slow sometimes, but also because there were lots of pages and most pages had more than one picture. Also it was time consuming as I had to make new screenshots, because the ones on the original page were quite old. But to make those new screenshots, I needed to go through different things that users could do, such as creating a form, creating blog posts, making polls, managing news digests and so on. Basically every function the portal offers needed a screenshot showing how it works. I finished work at five thirty as always and went home with the intention of making proper food for the first time since arriving in Rotterdam, because I didn't want to eat any more junkfood. After I got home, I visited the store right around the corner to get the ingredients to make cutlets and spaghetti. The thing is that up until that point, I had always made simple meals, and this was my very first attempt at making a more serious meal. My inexperience at cooking meant that I took everything extremely slowly, trying to not mess up and constantly checking the recipe. But to my surprise, the food actually turned out really well and tasted delicious. Feels nice to be somewhat independent.

My day at work was pretty good. I had to deal with optimizing all the images on the wikis. But I finally, after several days, managed to finish all of it. The next task was changing the footer on the english language page. Originally it had almost nothing and i was tasked with thinking how it should look and then customizing it accordingly. I would continue that task the next day as well.
After work, to my surprise, the other guys from the office took me to an italian restaurant and payed for my food. It was a really nice gesture and I very much appreciate that, but it was also kind of weird, because why ask me to go out to a restaurant and then talk in dutch amongst yourselves most of the time. That I do not understand. But hey..no complaints. Free pizza.

I continued work on the footer and managed to finish it before one o'clock. After that they started to work on a demo portal that would be possible to show to any potential customer. First i had to get rid of the current custom CSS code and then I had to think about what sort of widgets would/should be on the page. Once I had done that, they wanted my help in choosing colors for the demo portal and colors for the logo.
At home I tried cooking again, this time making coconut rice and chicken with tomato sauce. It turned out to be another win because it tasted awesome.

I was given three tasks: change the color of the page, add some users and work on the banner of the web page. I did the first two tasks quickly, but the banner was quite a piece of work. I was told it had to be above the navbar and contain the logo and something else. However since all the links were already in the navbar, I was left scratching my head and wondering what else the banner should contain. Basically I kept messing around with it all day, trying different things and nothing really seemed right. Before I knew it, the workday was over and I hadn't managed to progress as much as I wanted.
Since it was a long and tiring week and I felt I needed a break, I decided to relax the way I usually do, by going to the cinema. And since the Rotterdam IMAX cinema is only a kilometer away, I bought a ticket for a movie that started ten minutes after midnight. First time I ever watched a movie so late at the cinema. No regrets. It was fun.

I wanted to take this day to do some shopping because I had planned that since getting to Rotterdam. There is a certain chain of clothes stores all over Europe, but not in Estonia, called Primark. They nice clothes for good prices and that's why I wanted to go there. It's not so close the apartment however, about five and a half kilometers away. I had to plan going there and search the way from google maps. Riding by bike for five kilometers should not take that long, but when you're unsure of where to go, it does take quite a lot of time. It took me about an hour to get there, but I eventually managed to locate the right place. The mall is on the other side of the river and at first I had difficulty understanding how the hell i'm gonna get across the river because there was no bridge. Then I realized that if you want to get across the river, you have to go through a tunnel that runs under the river. The day was hot and the tunnel was nice and cold when riding your bike through it.

I spent quite a lot of time there because the store is big and there are lots of things to look at. I got some things that I wanted, but knew that I would have to go back there again. Finding my way back was already easier and didn't take very long.
At home I cooked another meal that I had never cooked before, this time making noodles with soy sauce, chicken and vegetables.

On sunday we went out together with our bikes to the Markethal to see what kind of things are available there. The Markethal is quite an amazing place. They sell all kinds of food there. It's really a place worth visiting.
Afterwards we went to another store and then home. Nothing really exciting on a lazy sunday.
